What does a child learn in mathematics in second grade of primary school?
In second grade, children count by twos and threes, read and write numbers up to one hundred in decimal notation, compare them, and order them on the number line. They perform additions and subtractions mentally and in columns, discover multiplication, and learn their first multiplication tables. They use coins and euros for small purchases, read the clock, describe the position of objects (above, below, right, left), follow a path, and recognize the main geometric shapes.
About the curriculum: in the 2026/2027 school year, this class still follows the 2012 National Curriculum Guidelines (Ministerial Decree no. 254 of November 16, 2012), which remain valid for classes already underway until the end of their cycle; the new Guidelines (Ministerial Decree no. 221 of December 9, 2025) take effect in this class in 2027/2028. The learning objectives are set at the end of third grade, not year by year: the selection of topics for this class is our own. The objectives, quoted verbatim, can be found in the section below.
