What does a student learn in mathematics in the 1st grade of high school?

In Grade 1, the student consolidates calculations on real numbers: powers with rational exponents, roots of any degree, and logarithms along with their properties. They transform algebraic expressions using algebraic identities, factor polynomials, and simplify rational expressions. They solve linear equations and inequalities, systems of equations, and determine a linear function from two points. They also calculate compound interest.

Important note on the core curriculum: the curriculum for high schools and technical secondary schools is formulated in blocks — it describes what the student knows at the end of secondary school, separately for the basic and extended levels. Assigning a topic to a grade is our decision based on a typical syllabus breakdown; in the “Curriculum scope” section, you can see the curriculum points with citations.

Page status: the tasks for this grade are ready in a context-free form (instruction and formula only); tasks with diagrams, proofs, and word problems will be added in subsequent steps.

Skills step by step

Factoring polynomials

The student factors a polynomial into a product of simpler expressions by factoring out a monomial, grouping terms, and applying the formulas for the sum and difference of cubes.

Curriculum point MAT.LO.2.P.3 factors out a monomial from an algebraic sum (our translation)

In the first year of high school and technical secondary school, students transform polynomials into factored form. They master three specific calculation techniques: factoring out a common monomial, factoring by grouping terms, and applying formulas for the sum and difference of cubes.

A common mistake is losing a term when factoring out a monomial—when the factor being factored out is the same as one of the terms, students often mistakenly write zero or omit it completely instead of leaving 1. Managing plus and minus signs also poses a significant challenge, especially when factoring out a negative factor in the grouping method and when correctly writing the incomplete square in the formulas for the sum and difference of cubes.

In practice, exercises practicing this skill include:

  • Factoring out a common monomial — finding a common numerical divisor and the power of the variable common to all terms,
  • Factoring by grouping — pairing the terms of the polynomial so that factoring out terms leaves the same expression inside the parentheses,
  • Sum and difference of cubes — recognizing the structure of the formula and factoring the binomial into a product of simpler factors.

Applying short multiplication formulas

The student proficiently transforms algebraic expressions using the formulas for the square of a sum, the square of a difference, and the product of a sum and a difference.

Curriculum point MAT.LO.2.P.1 applies short multiplication formulas for: (a + b)2, (a − b)2, a2 − b2 (our translation)

In the first year of high school and technical school, students master the transformation of second-degree algebraic expressions. They learn to replace multiplying brackets with ready-made algebraic identities, which allows them to quickly expand and simplify expressions containing variables and real numbers.

The most common mistake is omitting the double product when squaring a binomial—students mechanically square each term separately, writing (a + b)² as a² + b². Another frequent problem is losing minus signs, especially when a subtraction sign precedes the entire expression or when the term being squared has a negative coefficient.

Exercises in this area are based on two types of tasks:

  • Square of a sum and difference – expanding bracketed expressions raised to the second power into three terms,
  • Product of a sum and difference – multiplying pairs of brackets that differ only by a sign and writing them in the concise form of a difference of squares.

Calculating the sum and difference of logarithms

The student applies the formulas for the sum and difference of logarithms with the same base to simplify expressions and efficiently calculate their values.

Curriculum point MAT.LO.1.P.9 applies the relationship between logarithms and exponentiation, uses the formulas for the logarithm of a product, the logarithm of a quotient, and the logarithm of a power. (our translation)

In the first grade, students transform expressions containing logarithms with the same base. They use the rule stating that adding logarithms corresponds to the logarithm of a product, and subtracting them corresponds to the logarithm of a quotient. This allows finding the exact value of the entire expression even when individual terms cannot be calculated separately.

A common mistake is confusing these rules and adding the arguments of the logarithms instead of multiplying them (for example, incorrectly assuming that log a + log b is log(a + b) instead of log(a · b)). When subtracting, another frequent issue is reversing the order of division or attempting to combine logarithms that have different bases.

Tasks from the templates Sum of logarithms and Difference of logarithms require condensing two terms into a single logarithm. For example, the student combines two logarithms with the same base into a product or a fraction which, when simplified, yields a power of the base and allows writing the final answer as a single integer or fraction.

Calculating logarithms from the definition

The student calculates the values of simple logarithms for integers and fractions, using the definition directly and converting to exponentiation.

Curriculum point MAT.LO.1.P.1 performs operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponentiation, taking roots, taking logarithms) in the set of real numbers (our translation)
Curriculum point MAT.LO.1.P.9 applies the relationship between logarithms and exponentiation, uses the formulas for the logarithm of a product, the logarithm of a quotient, and the logarithm of a power. (our translation)

In the first grade of high school and technical secondary school, students learn the concept of a logarithm and how to evaluate it directly from the definition. Finding the solution involves answering the question: to what power must the base of the logarithm be raised to obtain the argument? At this stage, exercises include evaluating logarithms for integers as well as for common fractions and decimals.

The most common mistake stems from confusing exponentiation with multiplication or division—for example, instead of the value 3 for the base-2 logarithm of 8, a student gives 4 by dividing 8 by 2. With logarithms of fractions, another frequent issue is failing to take into account a negative exponent, which causes the student to drop the minus sign in the final result.

In practice, tasks testing this skill take the form of simple calculation problems:

  • Logarithm from the definition – direct evaluation where the result is a positive integer, e.g., evaluating the base-3 logarithm of 27.
  • Logarithm of a fraction – examples requiring the use of negative exponents or working with decimals, e.g., calculating the base-2 logarithm of 1/4 or the common logarithm of 0.1.

Addition, subtraction, and multiplication of polynomials

The student performs addition, subtraction, and multiplication of single-variable polynomials, combining like terms and ordering the obtained result.

Curriculum point MAT.LO.2.P.2 adds, subtracts and multiplies polynomials in one and several variables (our translation)

In grade 1 of secondary school, students perform basic operations on polynomials: they add, subtract, and multiply algebraic expressions, then combine like terms and write the resulting expression in standard form (from the highest to the lowest power of the variable).

The most common mistake when subtracting is forgetting to change the signs of all terms inside the subtracted parentheses. When multiplying polynomials, on the other hand, students often miss individual terms when multiplying term by term or make errors in exponent operations, such as multiplying exponents instead of adding them.

Tasks from the templates Adding and Subtracting Polynomials and Multiplying Polynomials involve performing the indicated operations on the given polynomial formulas, expanding the parentheses, and simplifying the entire expression to its simplest possible form.

Multiplication and subtraction of rational expressions

The student performs subtraction and multiplication of algebraic fractions, using factoring and finding a common denominator.

Curriculum point MAT.LO.2.P.4 multiplies and divides rational expressions. (our translation)

In grade 1 of high school and technical school, students perform operations on algebraic fractions (rational expressions). At this stage, they primarily master the subtraction and multiplication of such expressions, using their prior knowledge of algebraic identities and polynomial factoring.

A typical problem when subtracting is losing track of signs – students often forget that a minus sign in front of a fraction applies to the entire numerator, not just its first term. When multiplying, a common mistake is incorrect cancellation: attempting to simplify individual terms of an addition instead of entire factors in factored form.

In practice, exercises involve reducing expressions to their simplest form and appear in two main variants:

  • Subtraction of rational expressions — requires finding a common denominator, expanding the numerators accordingly, and combining like terms;
  • Multiplication of rational expressions — involves factoring numerators and denominators, canceling common expressions, and writing down the final product.

Formula of a linear function from points or a parallel line

The student determines the formula of a linear function based on the coordinates of two points or a point and the condition of parallelism to another line.

Curriculum point MAT.LO.5.P.6 determines the formula of a linear function based on information about its graph or about its properties (our translation)

In the first year of high school and technical secondary school, students master determining the formula of a linear function in the form y = ax + b. They can calculate numerical coefficients based on numerical data: they determine them from a system of equations formed for two given points or use the properties of parallel lines, knowing that they have the same slope a.

A common problem at this stage is confusing the coordinates of a point when substituting them into the formula – inserting the value of the first axis in place of y, and the second in place of x. Students also make arithmetic errors when reducing minus signs and confuse the condition for parallelism with the condition for perpendicularity, unnecessarily changing the sign of the slope.

In practice, exercises are based on two problem templates:

  • Linear function formula from two points – the student is given the coordinates of two points, e.g., (2, 5) and (-1, -1), and derives the equation of the line passing through both points;
  • Parallel line through a point – the student is given a line (e.g., y = 3x - 2) and a point not on it, and finds the equation of a new line, keeping the same slope a and calculating the new y-intercept b.

Systems of linear equations and their number of solutions

The student solves systems of two linear equations using the elimination method and determines whether the system has one solution, infinitely many solutions, or is inconsistent.

Curriculum point MAT.LO.4.P.1 solves systems of linear equations with two unknowns, gives a geometric interpretation of determinate, indeterminate, and inconsistent systems (our translation)

In the first grade of high school and technical school, students solve systems of two linear equations with two unknowns using the elimination method. They are able to transform equations so that adding them together eliminates one of the variables, and then solve for the other. They also learn to determine the number of solutions of a system: they can recognize a system with exactly one pair of numbers, a dependent system with infinitely many solutions, and an inconsistent system that has no solution.

A common mistake at this stage is dropping minus signs when multiplying an entire equation by an integer (especially a negative one) to obtain opposite coefficients. Students also struggle to correctly interpret non-standard outcomes: they confuse an identity, where reducing the variables yields the equality 0 = 0 (infinitely many solutions), with an inconsistency, where the result is a contradiction, such as 0 = 5 (no solution).

In practice, students practice these skills through exercises that involve:

  • fully solving a system in the template System of equations — elimination method and providing the pair of numbers that satisfies the equations,
  • analyzing equations in the template Number of solutions of a system, where the goal is to determine whether a given system has one solution, no solution at all, or infinitely many solutions.

Operations on powers and finding the exponent

The student applies the laws of exponents with the same base to correctly determine the missing exponent in equations.

Curriculum point MAT.LO.1.P.4 applies the relationship between root extraction and exponentiation and the laws of operations on powers and roots (our translation)

A student in grade 1 of high school and technical school proficiently applies the rules of powers with the same base: multiplication, division, and raising a power to a power. They use these rules to transform expressions and find unknown numbers in exponents.

A common mistake is confusing adding exponents with multiplying them when taking the product of powers with the same base (for example, writing the result of multiplying powers as the product of their exponents). Students also sometimes struggle to correctly subtract exponents during division, especially when negative numbers are involved, and they also confuse operations on exponents with operations on the bases themselves.

Exercises from the Missing Exponent — Operations on Powers template involve filling in the blank in an equation. The student sees an expression composed of powers with a common base and must calculate what number should replace the missing exponent so that the left side equals the right side.

Change of base of a logarithm

The student converts logarithms with different bases into a quotient of logarithms with a new, convenient base, which allows simplifying the expression and calculating its exact value.

In Grade 1 of secondary school, students learn the rule that allows them to change the base of a given logarithm to another, more convenient one for calculations. They write a single logarithm as a fraction in which both the numerator and the denominator have the newly chosen base, which makes it possible to convert expressions with different bases to a common base and find their values.

A common mistake when applying this formula is inverting the numerator and the denominator. Students often mechanically write the original base of the logarithm in the numerator of the new fraction and the argument into the denominator, instead of placing the argument on top and the old base on the bottom.

In problems from the template Change of base of a logarithm, students work on calculating the numerical values of fractions containing logarithms with non-standard bases or simplifying products of such logarithms into a single integer or fraction.

Calculating odd-degree roots

The student calculates the values of odd-degree roots, including those of negative numbers, correctly determining the sign of the result.

Curriculum point MAT.LO.1.P.1 performs operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponentiation, taking roots, taking logarithms) in the set of real numbers (our translation)
Curriculum point MAT.LO.1.P.3 applies the properties of roots of any degree, including odd-degree roots of negative numbers (our translation)

In Grade 1 of high school and technical school, students master evaluating odd-degree roots (for example, third or fifth degree). They learn to recognize a key property of these operations: a negative number can be under an odd-degree root, and the result of such root extraction always has the same sign.

The most common mistake is transferring the rule regarding square roots, which students worked with in primary school. Remembering that you cannot take an even root of negative numbers, they mistakenly consider an odd root of a negative number to be an impossible operation or remove the minus sign without justification, giving a positive result.

The tasks involve directly calculating numerical values in the template Odd-degree root. A typical example is finding the value of the cube root of -27, -125, or the fifth root of 32.

Calculating powers with rational exponents

The student learns to convert powers with fractional exponents into roots, calculate their values, and apply exponent rules to simplify expressions.

Curriculum point MAT.LO.1.P.4 applies the relationship between root extraction and exponentiation and the laws of operations on powers and roots (our translation)

In grade 1 of high school and technical secondary school, students are introduced to powers with fractional exponents. They learn to proficiently convert such expressions into radical form—where the denominator of the fraction determines the index of the root and the numerator is the exponent of the radicand—and to perform these operations in reverse, also in the case of negative fractional exponents.

A typical difficulty is confusing the roles of the numerator and denominator: students often treat the numerator of the fraction as the index of the root and the denominator as the power of the radicand. Another common mistake is failing to take into account the minus sign in the exponent, leading to omitting the reciprocal of the number before taking the root.

Exercises based on the Power with a rational exponent template primarily include evaluating specific numerical powers (e.g., 8 to the power of 2/3 or 16 to the power of -1/2) and simplifying expressions containing radicals by writing them as a single power with a fractional exponent.

Calculating capital on a bank deposit

The student calculates the final capital on a deposit, using the compound interest mechanism at a given interest rate and savings period.

Curriculum point MAT.LO.1.P.8 uses properties of powers and roots in practical situations, including calculating compound interest, returns on deposits and loan costs (our translation)

Students in the 1st grade of high school and technical school learn to determine the final value of savings using compound interest. At this stage, they use operations on powers to calculate how the deposited amount changes when interest is added to the principal and generates earnings itself in subsequent periods.

The most common mistake is confusing compound interest with simple interest. Students often calculate interest only once from the initial deposit and multiply it by the number of years, forgetting that in each subsequent cycle the base for calculating profit grows.

Tasks from the template Compound interest — term deposit present specific banking situations: the student is given an initial amount, an annual interest rate, and the duration of savings, and then calculates the final account balance taking regular compounding into account.

Solving linear inequalities with one unknown

The student learns to solve linear inequalities in one variable and to correctly determine and write down the set of numbers that satisfy them.

Curriculum point MAT.LO.3.P.3 solves linear inequalities in one unknown (our translation)

In grade 1 of high school and technical secondary school, students solve linear inequalities with one unknown. They reduce them to a simpler form by combining like terms as well as adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing both sides by real numbers to determine the required interval.

A typical problem is failing to flip the inequality sign when multiplying or dividing both sides by a negative number. Students often perform the calculations correctly, but leave the original inequality sign unchanged, which leads to an incorrect solution set.

Exercises from the Linear inequality template involve transforming a given algebraic inequality, finding the values of the unknown, and correctly writing the final result in the form of an inequality or an interval.

Identifying Inconsistent and Identity Equations

The student transforms linear equations and recognizes when they have no solutions, and when every real number satisfies them.

Curriculum point MAT.LO.3.P.1 transforms equations and inequalities in an equivalent manner, including e.g. equivalently transforms a rational equation (example in the act) (our translation)
Curriculum point MAT.LO.3.P.2 interprets inconsistent and identity linear equations and inequalities (our translation)

In grade 1 of high school and technical secondary school, students solve linear equations in one variable where, after rearranging both sides, the variable cancels out. They learn to correctly interpret the result obtained: determining that an equation is an identity (satisfied by every real number) when arriving at an identity such as 0 = 0, or inconsistent (no solutions) when arriving at a contradiction, for example 0 = 5.

A common problem occurs when, after the variable cancels out, the student assumes they made a calculation error. Instead of interpreting the result, students often force the variable back in or incorrectly conclude that 0 = 0 simply means a single solution x = 0, confusing an identity with a specific numerical value.

Exercises from the template Inconsistent or identity equation require performing basic algebraic transformations—such as combining like terms or removing parentheses—and then indicating whether the given equation has infinitely many solutions or no solutions at all.
