Mathematics — Grade 12

Mathematics in grade 4 of high school and technical school: solid geometry and solids of revolution, statistics, conditional probability and Bernoulli trials, and in the extended curriculum, the limit of a function and the derivative — plus revision for the matura exam. Ready-to-print exercises for every topic.

What does a student learn in mathematics in the 4th grade of high school?

In grade 4, students calculate the volumes and surface areas of prisms, pyramids, and solids of revolution, as well as segment lengths and cross-sectional areas of solids. In statistics, they calculate the mean, weighted mean, and median, and in probability theory, they use conditional probability, the law of total probability, and Bernoulli trials. In the extended curriculum, they learn function limits and derivatives: tangents to graphs, monotonicity, and extrema. Grade 4 ends with the matura exam, so it revisits the entire high school curriculum.

Important note regarding the core curriculum: the curriculum for high schools and technical secondary schools is formulated in blocks — it describes what a student knows at the end of secondary school, separately for the basic and extended levels. Assigning a topic to a grade is our decision based on a typical curriculum schedule; in the "Curriculum Scope" section, you can see the curriculum requirements with quotes.

Page status: the exercises for this grade are ready in a plain format (prompt and formula only); exercises with diagrams, proofs, and word problems are being added in subsequent steps.

Skills step by step

Calculating the surface area of a cylinder, cone, and sphere

The student calculates the total and lateral surface areas of a cylinder, a cone, and a sphere, and also determines the central angle of the net of the cone's lateral surface.

Curriculum point MAT.LO.10.P.4 identifies in cylinders and cones the angle between line segments and the angle between line segments and planes (e.g. the apex angle of a cone, the angle between the generatrix and the base), calculates the measures of these angles (our translation)
Curriculum point MAT.LO.10.P.5 calculates the volumes and surface areas of prisms, pyramids, a cylinder, a cone, and a sphere, also using trigonometry (our translation)

In the 4th grade of high school and technical secondary school, the student efficiently determines the total and lateral surface area of solids of revolution: cylinder, cone, and sphere. To do this, they use the relationships between the base radius, the height of the solid, and the slant height of the cone. They can also relate the dimensions of a solid to its net, including determining the measure of the central angle of the circular sector that forms the lateral surface of a cone.

A common mistake is confusing the slant height of a cone with its height when applying the lateral surface area formula, as well as forgetting to include two bases when calculating the total surface area of a cylinder. Students also tend to have difficulty determining the sector angle of the cone's lateral surface development, confusing the base radius with the radius of the circular sector, which is actually the slant height.

Tasks practicing this skill include direct calculations of the surface area of a sphere, cylinder, or cone based on given dimensions (such as radius, height, or the diagonal of an axial cross-section). Exam papers also feature tasks requiring the calculation of the sector angle of the lateral surface of a cone given the dimensions of its base and slant height.

Calculating the derivative of a function and its value

The student calculates the derivatives of polynomials, products, and composite functions, and also determines the value of the derivative at a specific point.

In grade 4 of high school and technical school, students master finding derivatives of functions as part of their preparation for the advanced-level matura exam. They proficiently apply differentiation rules to polynomials and products of two functions. They can also correctly differentiate composite functions and calculate the numerical value of the resulting derivative for a given argument.

A common mistake when calculating the derivative of a product is treating it as simple multiplication of the separate derivatives, without taking into account the proper rule. When dealing with composite functions, on the other hand, students most often forget to multiply by the derivative of the inner function, which completely distorts the final formula.

Tasks practicing this skill include:

  • the derivative of a polynomial and the derivative of a product, where the goal is to determine the new formula of the function,
  • the derivative of a composite function, requiring the identification of the inner and outer functions,
  • the value of a derivative at a point, where after finding the derivative formula, the student substitutes a given number and calculates the final numerical result.

Investigating the monotonicity and extrema of a function

The student can determine the intervals on which a function is increasing or decreasing, and identify the arguments and values of its local minima and maxima.

In the 4th grade of high school and technical school, students analyze the behavior of functions. Based on a formula or a graph, they are able to precisely determine the sets of arguments on which the function is increasing or decreasing, and identify the points where it reaches its local peaks (extrema).

A common mistake is confusing the point at which a function reaches an extremum (the argument x) with the extreme value itself (the value y). Students also tend to incorrectly combine intervals of monotonicity using the union symbol instead of separating them with a comma or the conjunction "and", which leads to false conclusions about the behavior of the function on the entire combined set.

In practice, problems involve analyzing specific cases and include the following exercises:

  • Intervals of increase and Intervals of decrease — determining intervals in which the function maintains a constant direction of change;
  • Local maximum and Local minimum — finding turning points where the function changes from increasing to decreasing or vice versa.

Calculating the arithmetic mean

The student calculates the arithmetic mean of a set of numerical data, reads values from bar charts, and applies the mean in practical everyday situations.

Curriculum point MAT.LO.12.P.2 calculates the arithmetic mean and the weighted mean, finds the median and the mode. (our translation)

As part of reviewing statistics, the student efficiently calculates the arithmetic mean. They can sum given quantities and divide the result by the number of data points, as well as process information presented in an organized or graphical manner.

A common mistake when working with a bar chart is dividing the sum of values by the number of bars (categories) instead of the actual sum of all counted observations. Students also forget to account for the weights resulting from repeated results and simply add the bar labels.

Exercises testing this skill include:

  • standard calculation of the result for a data set (Calculate the arithmetic mean),
  • reading values and frequencies from a chart (Mean from a bar chart),
  • solving word problems describing random phenomena, measurements, or finances (Mean in everyday life).

Calculating the volume of a cylinder, cone, and sphere

The student calculates the volume of solids of revolution: a cylinder, a cone, and a sphere, using the appropriate formulas based on the given geometric dimensions.

Curriculum point MAT.LO.10.P.5 calculates the volumes and surface areas of prisms, pyramids, a cylinder, a cone, and a sphere, also using trigonometry (our translation)

In grade 4 of secondary school, students consolidate their ability to determine the volume of solids of revolution. Given the basic dimensions—the base radius and height in the case of a cylinder and a cone, and the radius in the case of a sphere—they select the appropriate formula and carry out accurate calculations, expressing the result in exact form (using the symbol π) or as an approximation.

A common mistake is confusing the radius with the diameter, as well as dropping numerical coefficients in the formulas. Students often forget the fraction 1/3 when calculating the volume of a cone, and in the case of a sphere, they confuse the powers of the radius, squaring the radius in the formula instead of cubing it.

Exercises for practicing this skill include directly calculating values on the worksheets: Volume of a cylinder, Volume of a cone, and Volume of a sphere. Students solve word problems or work from diagrams, calculating the volume of a given three-dimensional solid based on the provided dimensions.

Calculating diagonals, edges, and slant heights in solids

The student determines the lengths of key segments in polyhedra and solids of revolution, such as the diagonal of a rectangular prism, the edge of a pyramid, or the slant height of a cone.

Curriculum point MAT.LO.10.P.5 calculates the volumes and surface areas of prisms, pyramids, a cylinder, a cone, and a sphere, also using trigonometry (our translation)

In the 4th grade of high school and technical secondary school, students organize and consolidate their knowledge of solid geometry, efficiently determining the lengths of key segments in space. Based on the given dimensions of a solid, they can identify the appropriate right-angled triangle inside the figure and calculate the desired quantity — most often using the Pythagorean theorem.

A typical difficulty at this stage is incorrectly locating the right-angled triangle in space. Students often confuse the space diagonal of a rectangular cuboid with the diagonal of a lateral face, and in a cone, they equate the slant height with its height. In the case of pyramids, a frequent mistake is connecting the lateral edge to the wrong segment of the base (for example, to the height of the base instead of the radius of the circumscribed circle around it).

Problems testing this skill are based on specific models of solids:

  • Space diagonal of a rectangular cuboid — calculating the length of the segment connecting two opposite vertices of the solid based on the dimensions of its edges;
  • Slant height of a cone — determining the length of the slant height given the height of the cone and the radius of its base;
  • Lateral edge of a pyramid — calculating the length of the lateral edge based on the height of the pyramid and the geometry of its base.

Total probability and Bayes' theorem

The student calculates the probability of multi-stage events and conditional probability using Bayes' theorem by analyzing the drawing of balls from two different urns.

In grade 4, students solve problems involving two-stage experiments using the law of total probability and Bayes' theorem. They break down a complex experiment into mutually exclusive cases (hypotheses) and calculate the probability of the final event occurring, and they are also able to determine the conditional probability of a cause when the resulting effect is already known.

A common mistake is confusing conditional probability with the joint probability of both events, or omitting the first stage of the draw. Students often focus solely on the number of balls in the container, forgetting to multiply the result by the probability of selecting the urn itself.

In practice, problems are often based on the setup of two urns with different contents of white and black balls. The student first selects one of the urns (e.g., by flipping a coin) and then draws a ball from it. In total probability problems, they determine the chance of drawing a ball of a specific color, and by applying Bayes' theorem, they calculate, for example, how likely it is that the white ball came from the first urn, given that such a color was drawn.

Bernoulli trials and binomial distribution

The student calculates the probability of a given number of successes in repeated trials using Bernoulli trials and determines the expected value of the binomial distribution.

In Grade 4, the student solves problems based on repeating the same random experiment with two possible outcomes: success or failure. They apply the formula for Bernoulli trials to calculate the probability of obtaining an exact number of successes in a series of trials and determine the expected value of such a distribution—the anticipated average number of successful outcomes.

A typical mistake at this stage is omitting the binomial coefficient in the formula. The student correctly multiplies the probabilities of successes and failures, but forgets that the same outcomes can occur in different orders. There are also errors in misassigning the probabilities of success and failure, or applying Bernoulli trials to situations where the probability changes from trial to trial.

Problems in this topic are based on practical contexts, such as a series of dice rolls, shots at a target, or quality control of defective items in a batch of products. Practice materials cover two main types of tasks: Bernoulli Trials, where the goal is to calculate the probability of a specific number of successes, and Expected Value of a Binomial Distribution, where the student determines the expected average outcome for a given number of repetitions.

Determining the median of a data set

The student organizes a set of numerical data and determines its median by identifying the middle value or calculating the arithmetic mean of the two middle numbers.

Curriculum point MAT.LO.12.P.2 calculates the arithmetic mean and the weighted mean, finds the median and the mode. (our translation)

A student in grade 4 of general and technical secondary school efficiently finds the median for a finite set of numerical data as part of a statistics review. They distinguish between a situation where the number of data points is odd (identifying a single middle value) and a situation with an even number of data points, where the median is the arithmetic mean of the two middle elements.

A typical error at this stage is selecting the middle value directly from an unordered dataset, skipping the initial arrangement of the numbers from smallest to largest. It also happens that, with an even number of elements, the student provides both middle numbers instead of calculating their mean.

Tasks from the template Find the median involve analyzing the given sequence of numbers, ordering it, and determining the exact value of the median.

Conditional probability based on a table

The student calculates the conditional probability of an event, reading the relevant group sizes and conditions directly from the data table.

In grade 4, students learn to determine the probability of an event occurring given that another event has occurred. Using numerical data in two-way tables, they restrict the sample space of all possible outcomes exclusively to the group satisfying the given condition and, based on this, calculate the desired probability as a fraction.

The most common mistake at this stage is dividing the number of favorable elements by the total number of all surveyed people or objects in the entire table, rather than by the sum of elements that make up the given condition. Students also confuse the direction of dependence, swapping the target event with the condition (for example, confusing the probability of being in a given group given a specific result with the reverse situation).

Tasks from the template Conditional probability from a table present statistical data concerning a specific group—for example, the breakdown of students by gender and foreign language choice. The prompt requires identifying the correct cells in the table and calculating the probability of randomly selecting a person with a specific characteristic, given in advance that they satisfy the condition specified in the task.

Calculating the weighted average

The student calculates the weighted average of a data set, correctly assigning weights to individual values and dividing the sum of the products by the sum of the weights.

Curriculum point MAT.LO.12.P.2 calculates the arithmetic mean and the weighted mean, finds the median and the mode. (our translation)

In the 4th grade of high school and technical secondary school, the student determines the weighted average of a data set. They efficiently multiply each value by its corresponding weight, sum the resulting products, and then divide the result by the total sum of the weights.

The most common mistake is dividing the sum of the products by the count of the given numbers instead of the sum of their weights, which stems from the habit of calculating a simple arithmetic mean. Students also sometimes struggle to correctly distinguish between the value of a feature and its weight, especially when the weights are expressed as percentages or fractions.

In exercises from the Weighted average template, the student solves problems set in a practical context, such as determining a semester grade based on tests of varying importance or calculating the average purchase price of goods from different deliveries. The task involves extracting the data, correctly setting up the arithmetic expression, and calculating the result.

Calculating the cross-sectional area of a cube

The student determines the shape of the plane intersecting a cube through selected face diagonals and calculates the area of the resulting cross-section.

The student analyzes the position of the cutting plane in a cube and identifies which geometric figure the given cross-section forms. Based on this, they determine the side lengths of the polygon using the edge length of the solid and the Pythagorean theorem, and then calculate its area.

The most common difficulty is misinterpreting the shape of the figure in an oblique projection drawing—for example, confusing a rectangle with a square or an equilateral triangle with an arbitrary triangle. Students also often confuse the edge length of the cube with the side length of the cross-section, forgetting that this side is a diagonal of a lateral face or the base.

A typical problem involves calculating the area of a cross-section of a cube passing through selected face diagonals. Given the edge length of the solid, the student determines the dimensions of the resulting polygon (e.g., a rectangle whose sides are an edge and a face diagonal) and writes the final result in exact form.

Calculating the volume of similar solids

The student calculates the volume of a similar solid, using the relationship that the ratio of the volumes of two solids is equal to the cube of the scale of their similarity.

Curriculum point MAT.LO.10.P.6 uses the relationship between the volumes of similar solids. (our translation)

In the final grade of secondary school, students consolidate their knowledge of solid geometry as part of their preparations for graduation exams. At this stage, they efficiently determine the volume of a solid similar to a given one using the similarity ratio k. Instead of painstakingly recalculating the dimensions of all edges or heights of the new solid, they make use of the fact that the ratio of their volumes is equal to k cubed.

A common mistake at this stage is multiplying the original volume by the scale factor k itself or by its square. Students often mechanically carry over habits from scaling line segments or surface areas, forgetting that three-dimensional space requires raising the similarity ratio to the power of three.

Exercises from the Volume of a similar solid template present students with a situation where the volume of the first solid is known, along with the ratio of corresponding edges or the scale of enlargement of the solid. The student's task is to calculate the cube of this scale and determine the missing volume.

Calculating the limit of a function at a point

The student calculates the limits of a function at a point, examining the behavior of the function's values as the arguments approach a chosen number.

In the 4th grade of high school and technical school as part of the advanced curriculum, students analyze the behavior of a function in the neighborhood of a given number and determine the limit of a function at a point. They understand the difference between the value of the function at a given point itself and the value that the outputs approach as the argument approaches the number being examined.

A typical mistake is stopping at the stage where zero appears in the denominator of a fraction. Students often mistakenly assume that the limit does not exist or that the operation is undefined, instead of recognizing an indeterminate form (e.g., 0/0) and transforming the function's formula—for example, by canceling a common factor in the numerator and denominator.

Tasks from the template Limit of a function at a point involve calculating the limit for a given algebraic expression (most often a rational function). The student checks whether direct substitution of the given number is sufficient, and if this leads to an indeterminate form, simplifies the fraction and only then calculates the final numerical result.

Equation of the tangent line to a graph using the derivative

The student learns to determine the equation of the tangent line to the graph of a function at a given point, using the geometric interpretation of the derivative.

In grade 4 of high school and technical secondary school, students connect the concept of the derivative with analytic geometry. They can calculate the derivative of a function at a chosen point, which determines the slope of the line, and then find the complete equation of the tangent line to the graph at the point with given coordinates.

A common mistake is confusing the value of the derivative at a point with the value of the function itself, or substituting the entire general formula of the derivative into the equation of the line instead of a specific number calculated for the given argument. Sign errors also occur when transforming the equation into slope-intercept form.

In tasks from the template Tangent to the graph of a function, the student is given the formula of a function and the x-coordinate of the point of tangency. Their goal is to determine the second coordinate of the point, calculate the value of the derivative at this point, and write the final equation of the tangent line in the form y = ax + b.
