What do you learn in 4th grade of Mittelschule and AHS in mathematics?
In Grade 4, the number range is extended to real numbers: square roots, approximate values, and calculation rules for roots. Linear functions f(x) = k · x + d are represented as tables, graphs, and equations, and the parameters k and d are interpreted. Systems of linear equations in two variables are set up and solved. In geometry: the Pythagorean theorem, circumference and area of circles and circle sectors, surface area and volume of cylinders and cones of revolution. In addition, cross tables (four-field tables) and two-stage random experiments are covered.
On the curriculum: The basis is the curriculum of the AHS lower secondary level (Annex A of the Regulation BGBl. No. 88/1985 as amended by BGBl. II No. 1/2023). The Mittelschule has the same competency descriptions in mathematics and only distinguishes the performance levels "Standard" and "Standard AHS". For Grade 4, the curriculum has applied since the 2026/27 school year. The competency descriptions are given verbatim in the block below.
