What does a second-year high school student learn in mathematics?
In second year of liceo, students complete the first two-year period: they calculate with radicals and with powers with rational exponents, solve linear systems using the different methods and the problems that require them, and use intervals and inequalities. They study the line in the Cartesian plane (equation, parallelism, perpendicularity), the functions f(x) = |x| and f(x) = a/x, composition and the inverse function, geometric transformations and similarity. In statistics they calculate variance and standard deviation and compare distributions.
About the curriculum: the liceo schools follow the Indicazioni nazionali (National Guidelines) of D.M. 7 October 2010, n. 211 (G.U. [Official Gazette] n. 291 of 14 December 2010, S.O. [Ordinary Supplement] n. 275). The specific objectives for mathematics are set for the first two-year period, not year by year: the choice of topics for this class is ours. This page collects what is common to all liceo schools; the liceo scientifico has a separate page, because it anticipates and expands many topics. The objectives, quoted verbatim, can be found in the section below.
