Standardy oznaczone symbolem (+) wykraczają poza podstawowy zakres przygotowania do studiów i kariery zawodowej.

nasze tłumaczenie · brzmienie oryginalne (EN): Explain how the definition of the meaning of rational exponents follows from extending the properties of integer exponents to those values, allowing for a notation for radicals in terms of rational exponents. For example, we define 5 1/3 to be the cube root of 5 because we want (51/3)3 = 5(1/3)3 to hold, so (51/3)3 must equal 5.

Umiejętności krok po kroku

Factoring Polynomials: Grouping and Cubes

Students learn to rewrite polynomial expressions by factoring out common monomials, grouping terms, and using the sum and difference of cubes.

In 9th grade, students learn to inspect the structure of a polynomial expression to identify how it can be rewritten in factored form. At this stage, they expand beyond basic trinomials to extract greatest common factors, factor four-term expressions by grouping terms into pairs, and recognize expressions made of two cubed terms.

A frequent error occurs with negative signs when factoring by grouping: students often forget to change the sign of the second term when pulling a negative monomial out of a pair. With cubes, students commonly mix up the signs in the formula or mistakenly treat the resulting quadratic factor as a standard trinomial that can be factored further.

Printable practice on this skill focuses on three types of tasks:

  • Factoring out a monomial: finding the greatest common factor shared across all terms and dividing it out in front of parentheses.
  • Factoring by grouping: organizing four terms into two pairs to extract a common binomial factor.
  • Sum and difference of cubes: identifying expressions with two cubed terms and rewriting them as a product of a linear factor and a quadratic factor.

Evaluating Linear Functions

Students learn to substitute a given input into a linear equation using function notation to calculate the single matching output value.

At this stage, students work with linear rules in the form f(x) = mx + b. Given a specific numerical input for x, they substitute that value into the rule, multiply it by the slope, and add or subtract the constant term to find the unique output value.

A frequent error occurs when students confuse function notation with multiplication, reading f(4) as an instruction to multiply an unknown f by 4 rather than finding the rule's value at 4. Students also routinely make sign errors when substituting negative numbers or working with negative coefficients, dropping negative signs during the multiplication step.

Tasks on printable worksheets present linear functions and ask students to determine the output for a given domain value. In practice, students either solve for and enter the final value directly or identify the correct answer from multiple-choice options.

Finding Terms and Sums of Arithmetic Sequences

Students learn to write formulas to find any term in an arithmetic sequence and calculate the sum of a given number of terms.

Students learn to identify arithmetic sequences with a constant difference added between consecutive terms. In 9th grade, they use explicit formulas to calculate any specific nth term directly and determine the total sum of a set number of terms without having to write out every value in between.

A frequent mistake happens when building the formula for the nth term: students often multiply the common difference by n rather than n − 1, forgetting that the starting term has no difference added yet. When calculating the sum of a sequence, students also commonly mix up the value of the final term with the total number of terms being added.

Worksheet practice focuses on two concrete exercise types:

  • Arithmetic sequence — nth term: Students take a sequence or table of values, determine the common difference, and calculate a distant term, such as the 20th or 50th term.
  • Arithmetic sequence — sum of terms: Students apply the sequence formula to find the combined total of the first n terms.

Finding Terms and Sums of Geometric Sequences

Students learn to find any specific term in a geometric sequence and calculate the sum of a set of terms using formulas.

In 9th grade, students work with geometric sequences—ordered lists of numbers where each term is found by multiplying the previous one by a fixed common ratio (not equal to 1). Students identify the starting value and the multiplier, write explicit formulas, and use them to calculate any distant term (the nth term) as well as the total sum of a finite number of terms.

A common error occurs in the exponent of the nth term formula. Students frequently multiply the starting term by the common ratio raised to the power of n instead of n − 1, forgetting that the first term involves zero multiplications. When finding sums, students often misapply negative signs or mishandle parentheses when the common ratio is a fraction or a negative number.

Worksheet tasks build this skill using two primary formats:

  • Geometric sequence — nth term: Students look at a given list of numbers (such as 3, 6, 12, ...) or a real-world scenario, determine the common ratio, and find a specific value, such as the 8th term.
  • Geometric sequence — sum of terms: Students take a sequence and calculate the total sum of its first several terms by substituting the first term, the ratio, and the count into the finite geometric series formula.

Finding Terms of a Sequence

Students learn to find specific values in a sequence by substituting integer inputs into a formula or using a step-by-step recursive rule.

In 9th grade, students treat sequences as functions whose domain consists of integers, such as n ≥ 1 or starting from n = 0. Students learn to determine specific terms by evaluating an explicit algebraic formula for a given position or by stepping through a recursive definition using provided starting values.

A frequent stumbling block is confusing the term's position number, n, with the term's value, f(n). Students also commonly misinterpret notation such as f(n − 1), accidentally subtracting 1 from the term's numerical value instead of referring to the previous term in the sequence.

Practice tasks generally focus on two standard formats:

  • Term of a sequence from its formula: Students plug an integer position directly into a function formula to calculate that specific term.
  • Term of a recursive sequence: Students start with given initial terms (such as f(0) or f(1)) and apply a recurrence relation, like f(n + 1) = f(n) + 3, to generate subsequent terms one by one.

Multiplying Special Binomial Products

Students learn to recognize patterns to quickly expand squares of binomials and products of sums and differences without multiplying term by term.

In 9th grade, students learn to use the underlying structure of expressions to expand them efficiently using shortcut patterns. Rather than multiplying every term one by one, they identify whether a problem matches a specific algebraic rule to write down the expanded polynomial directly.

The most common mistake happens when squaring a sum or a difference. Students frequently write (x + 4)^2 as x^2 + 16, incorrectly applying the exponent to each term inside the parentheses and leaving out the middle term generated when multiplying the binomial by itself.

Worksheet tasks give students practice with two specific templates:

  • Square of a sum or difference: expanding terms like (x + 5)^2 or (2x - 3)^2 into a complete three-term quadratic expression.
  • Product of a sum and a difference: multiplying pairs such as (x + 7)(x - 7) where the middle terms cancel out, leaving a difference of squares.

Finding Values of Exponential Functions

Students learn to evaluate exponential functions for given inputs and interpret initial values and growth or decay factors in real-world contexts.

Punkt podstawy HSF-LE.B.5 Interpretować parametry funkcji liniowej lub wykładniczej w odniesieniu do kontekstu. (nasze tłumaczenie)

In Grade 9, students learn to calculate the output of an exponential function and understand what each parameter represents in a word problem. They identify the starting amount (the initial value when the input is zero) and use repeated multiplication by a constant base to determine how quantities change over time.

A frequent mistake happens when dealing with decay. When a quantity shrinks, students often confuse the rate of decrease with the base multiplier—for instance, multiplying by 0.15 instead of 0.85 when something decreases by 15%. Another common error is multiplying the initial value by the base before applying the exponent, ignoring the proper order of operations.

Worksheet tasks focus on problems like Value of an exponential function and Decreasing exponential function. A typical problem presents a real-world scenario, such as the declining value of a car or the cooling of an object, and asks students to evaluate the formula after a specific number of time intervals or state what a specific number in the equation means in that situation.

Finding Equations of Lines and Parallel Lines

Students learn to write the equation of a linear function given either two coordinate points or a single point and a parallel line.

In 9th grade, students learn to write an explicit algebraic equation for a linear function. They use coordinate points to calculate the slope—the rate of change—and determine where the line crosses the vertical axis (the y-intercept). When working with parallel lines, students recognize and apply the geometric principle that parallel lines share the exact same slope.

A common error occurs during coordinate substitution. When solving for the y-intercept, students frequently swap the x and y values into the formula, leading to an incorrect constant. When working with parallel lines, students also tend to alter the slope rather than keeping it identical to the original equation.

Worksheet tasks come in two standard formats:

  • Linear function through two points: Students receive two coordinates, calculate the slope between them, and write the resulting linear equation.
  • Parallel line through a point: Students are given an existing linear equation and a separate point, requiring them to extract the slope and construct a new line that passes through that specific point.

Finding the Vertex and Using Vertex Form

Students learn to use vertex form and completing the square to identify the vertex, maximum or minimum value, and axis of symmetry of a parabola.

Punkt podstawy HSF-IF.C.8 Write a function defined by an expression in different but equivalent forms to reveal and explain different properties of the function. a. Use the process of factoring and completing the square in a quadratic function to show zeros, extreme values, and symmetry of the graph, and interpret these in terms of a context. b. Use the properties of exponents to interpret expressions for exponential functions. For example, identify percent rate of change in functions such as y = (1.02)t, y = (0.97)t, y = (1.01)12t, y = (1.2)t/10, and classify them as representing exponential growth or decay.

In 9th grade Algebra I, students learn to rewrite quadratic expressions into vertex form to reveal key features of a parabola. By using techniques such as completing the square, they convert standard quadratic functions into equivalent forms that display the graph's extreme values (maximum or minimum points) and line of symmetry without needing to plot every point.

A common hurdle is keeping track of signs within the vertex form, typically written as y = a(x - h)2 + k (or without superscript tags, as a squared term). Because of the subtraction inside the parentheses, students often mix up positive and negative coordinates, incorrectly identifying the vertex of an expression like (x + 4)2 + 1 as (4, 1) rather than (-4, 1).

Practice tasks draw from templates such as Vertex of a parabola and Vertex form of a quadratic function. A typical problem presents a quadratic equation and asks students to extract the coordinates of the turning point, identify whether it opens upward or downward, or rewrite a standard polynomial expression to pinpoint its vertex directly.

Solving Systems of Equations by Elimination

Students learn to solve pairs of linear equations in two variables using elimination and determine whether a system has one, none, or infinitely many solutions.

In Grade 9, students solve pairs of linear equations in two variables to find exact numerical solutions. Using the elimination method, they add or subtract equations—multiplying one or both equations by a constant when necessary—so that one variable cancels out. Students also evaluate the resulting algebraic statements to identify whether a system has a single coordinate pair as its solution, no solution, or infinitely many solutions.

A frequent error occurs when multiplying an entire equation to set up opposite coefficients. Students often forget to distribute negative signs or miss multiplying the constant term on the other side of the equal sign. Confusion also arises when both variables cancel out: students frequently confuse a false statement like 0 = 4 (which means there is no solution) with a true statement like 0 = 0 (which indicates infinitely many solutions).

Practice tasks generally fall into two formats:

  • System of equations — elimination presents two linear equations arranged in standard form, requiring students to find the exact values for both variables.
  • Number of solutions of a system asks students to manipulate and compare equations to state whether the system has one unique solution, no solution, or infinitely many solutions.

Calculating the Variance of a Data Set

Students learn to calculate the variance of a data set to measure how individual values spread out from the mean.

Punkt podstawy HSS-ID.A.2 Stosować statystyki odpowiednie do kształtu rozkładu danych, aby porównać środek (medianę, średnią) i rozproszenie (rozstęp międzykwartylowy, odchylenie standardowe) dwóch lub więcej różnych zestawów danych. (nasze tłumaczenie)

In Grade 9, students quantify how spread out numerical values are by calculating data variance. Working with a list of values, they find the mean, determine how far each data point deviates from that mean, square those individual differences, and then find the average of those squared values.

A frequent error occurs when working with deviations that fall below the mean. Students often struggle with squaring negative numbers, either dropping the negative signs too early or incorrectly writing a negative result after squaring. Another common mistake is adding the squared differences correctly but forgetting the final step of dividing by the number of data points.

Worksheets for this skill center on finding the variance of a data set. A typical task presents a short list of numbers, asking the student to carry out the calculation step-by-step to arrive at a single numerical measure of spread.

Working with Fractional Exponents

Students learn to rewrite expressions involving fractional exponents and radicals by applying the standard properties of exponents.

Punkt podstawy HSN-RN.A.2 Przekształcać wyrażenia zawierające pierwiastki i wykładniki wymierne, stosując własności potęg. (nasze tłumaczenie)

In 9th grade, students learn to work with numbers and variables raised to fractional powers. They use properties of exponents to rewrite expressions that feature rational exponents, translating smoothly between radical form and power form.

A common mistake is confusing the roles of the numerator and the denominator in a fractional power. Students often forget which value represents the root and which represents the exponent, sometimes treating a denominator as a regular multiplier or reversing the root and power when converting to radical notation.

Practice tasks based on the Power with a rational exponent template present an expression with a base raised to a fraction. Students apply exponent rules to simplify the expression or convert it between radical form and exponential form.

Solving Linear Inequalities in One Variable

Students learn to solve linear inequalities in one variable by isolating the unknown value to find all possible solutions.

Punkt podstawy HSA-REI.B.3 Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable, including equations with coefficients represented by letters.

In 9th grade, students solve linear inequalities with one variable by using inverse operations to isolate the unknown value. They manipulate expressions containing positive and negative numbers, as well as coefficients represented by letters, to determine the entire set of numbers that makes an inequality true.

The most common mistake happens when multiplying or dividing both sides by a negative value. Students frequently forget to reverse the inequality symbol, treating the problem like a standard equation and ending up with an inequality that points in the wrong direction.

Typical tasks from the linear inequality template ask students to solve problems such as -3x + 4 < 19 or expressions with variables on both sides. Students apply addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to isolate the variable and state the final solution.

Equations with No Solution or Infinite Solutions

Students learn to solve linear equations in one variable that result in either no solution or infinitely many solutions.

Punkt podstawy HSA-REI.B.3 Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable, including equations with coefficients represented by letters.

Students solve multi-step linear equations in one variable where the variable terms cancel out on both sides during simplification. They learn to interpret the remaining statement: if simplifying leads to a true mathematical statement (such as 5 = 5), there are infinitely many solutions; if it produces a contradiction (such as 0 = 7), the equation has no solution.

A common mistake occurs when the variables drop out entirely and leave a true statement like 0 = 0. Students often mistakenly write that the answer is x = 0, confusing zero as a specific value with a statement that holds true for all numbers. Similarly, when faced with a false statement like 3 = 8, students frequently assume they made an arithmetic error and continue searching for a single number instead of recognizing that no value can satisfy the equation.

Worksheet tasks present an equation with no or infinitely many solutions. Students apply standard algebraic steps—such as using the distributive property, combining like terms, and isolating variables—to simplify the equation and determine whether it has no solution or infinitely many solutions.

Solving Quadratic Equations

Students learn to solve quadratic equations by factoring, taking square roots, completing the square, and using the quadratic formula, identifying both real and complex solutions.

Punkt podstawy HSA-REI.B.4 Rozwiązywać równania kwadratowe z jedną niewiadomą. a. Stosować metodę dopełniania do kwadratu w celu przekształcenia dowolnego równania kwadratowego ze zmienną x w równanie postaci (x – p)2 = q mające te same rozwiązania.

Students learn to solve quadratic equations in one variable using a range of methods matched to the equation's structure. They solve straightforward problems by inspection or square roots, such as finding values for equations like x² = 49, and transform equations into the form (x – p)² = q by completing the square. They also solve using factoring and the quadratic formula, learning to identify when an equation yields complex solutions and expressing those solutions in the form a ± bi.

A typical error happens when students take square roots and forget to include the negative root, reporting only the positive value (for example, finding 7 but omitting –7). Another frequent mistake involves sign errors when simplifying the terms under the square root in the quadratic formula, which often leads students to overlook when a solution requires complex numbers.

Practice tasks using the Quadratic equation template present equations in various initial forms. Students examine each equation, choose the most appropriate method—whether factoring, taking square roots, completing the square, or applying the quadratic formula—and write out the full solution steps.

Shifting Function Graphs Up, Down, Left, and Right

Students learn how adding or subtracting a number shifts a graph up, down, left, or right, and identify the shift value from a coordinate graph.

In 9th grade, students explore how basic function graphs move along the coordinate plane when their formulas change. Focusing on translations, they learn to identify the visual effect of replacing f(x) with f(x) + k or f(x + k) for specific positive and negative values of k. They also work backward: given a base curve and a shifted curve, they find the exact positive or negative value of k that produced the move.

The most common mistake happens with horizontal translations. When students see an expression like f(x + 3), intuition tells them to move toward the positive numbers on the x-axis (to the right). In fact, adding a positive value inside the function moves the graph 3 units to the left, while subtracting moves it to the right. Students frequently reverse this horizontal direction, or confuse shifts applied inside the input, f(x + k), with vertical shifts added outside, f(x) + k.

In Translating a graph tasks, students usually work with coordinate grids showing an original function and its shifted copy. They may be asked to write the new formula, identify whether the transformation moved vertically or horizontally, or sketch the new position given an expression such as f(x) − 5 or f(x + 2).

Calculating Average Rate of Change

Students learn to calculate, estimate, and interpret how quickly a function's values change over a specific interval using equations, tables, and graphs.

Punkt podstawy HSF-IF.B.6 Obliczać i interpretować średnią szybkość zmian funkcji (przedstawionej symbolicznie lub w postaci tabeli) w określonym przedziale. Szacować szybkość zmian na podstawie wykresu. ★ (nasze tłumaczenie)

In 9th grade, students learn to find how much a function’s output changes relative to its input over a set interval. Working with functions given as equations, data tables, or graphs, students compute the change in the output values divided by the change in the input values. When looking at a graph, they estimate this rate directly by observing the steepness between two points.

A frequent stumbling block is reversing the inputs and outputs, leading students to divide the change in x by the change in y instead of change in y over change in x. Students also commonly mistake an interval notation like [2, 5] for an (x, y) coordinate pair rather than two separate input values, or they subtract the values in an inconsistent order across the numerator and denominator.

Worksheets using the Average rate of change template present students with a function formula, a table of values, or a plotted curve alongside a specified interval. Students calculate the function values at the start and end of that interval, carry out the division, and state the rate of change or interpret what that rate represents in real-world scenarios.

Combining Functions Through Composition

Students learn to substitute one function into another to evaluate or write composite expressions like f(g(x)).

In 9th grade, students learn to connect two relationships by using the output of one function directly as the input for another. They evaluate these nested rules at a given number, such as finding f(g(3)), and build new algebraic formulas for combined functions, written as f(g(x)), using the standard linear and quadratic relationships introduced in this grade.

A common error is confusing composition with multiplication. When asked to evaluate f(g(x)), students often calculate f(x) times g(x) instead of substituting the entire expression for g(x) into the variable of f(x). Another typical slip is reversing the sequence by applying the outer rule before the inner rule, rather than working from the inside out.

Tasks in the Composition of functions set typically present two function rules, such as f(x) = 2x + 1 and g(x) = 3x - 4. Students are asked to evaluate the chained rule for a specific input value or to write and simplify a single algebraic expression representing the full composition.

Finding the Inverse of a Linear Function

Students learn to write the formula for the inverse of a linear function by rearranging the equation to solve for the original input.

Punkt podstawy HSF-BF.B.4 Wyznacz funkcje odwrotne. a.

In 9th grade, students learn to find the inverse of a simple linear function. They take an equation of the form f(x) = mx + b, set it equal to an output value or variable, and undo the operations step by step to solve for the original input variable x. This allows them to produce a new linear rule that reverses the effect of the starting function.

A common mistake is confusing an inverse function with a reciprocal. Students frequently write 1 / f(x) instead of finding the undoing rule, partly because negative exponent notation can look similar. Another frequent error is reversing the order of operations incorrectly—such as dividing by the slope before subtracting the constant term when isolating the variable.

Worksheet tasks for the Inverse of a linear function present a linear equation, such as f(x) = 4x - 7 or f(x) = -2x + 3. Students work through the algebraic steps to isolate the input and write the resulting inverse expression, typically expressed in function notation as f⁻¹(x) = (x + 7) / 4.

Solving Systems of a Line and a Parabola

Students learn to find the points where a straight line and a parabola intersect using algebraic methods and graphing.

Punkt podstawy HSA-REI.C.7 Rozwiąż prosty układ składający się z równania liniowego i równania kwadratowego z dwiema zmiennymi algebraicznie i graficznie. Na przykład znajdź punkty przecięcia prostej y = –3x i okręgu x2 + y2 = 3. (nasze tłumaczenie)

In Grade 9, students solve systems of equations that pair a linear equation with a quadratic equation. They learn to determine the coordinates where a line and a parabola meet, working both graphically on a coordinate grid and algebraically by substituting the linear expression into the quadratic equation to solve for the shared variables.

A common mistake is finding the values for x and stopping there. Because the solution to a system represents points of intersection, students must plug each x back into the linear equation to find its matching y-value and write the final answers as complete coordinate pairs, such as (x, y). Students also frequently make sign errors when setting the combined equation equal to zero before factoring or using the quadratic formula.

Worksheet tasks focus on finding the intersections of a parabola and a line. A typical exercise provides a system like y = x² + 2x - 1 and y = x + 5, asking students to either graph both equations to identify where they cross or use substitution to calculate the exact intersection points.

Finding the Value of a Quadratic Function

Students learn to substitute a given number into a quadratic function and calculate its output value using function notation.

Punkt podstawy HSF-IF.A.2 Używać notacji funkcyjnej, obliczać wartości funkcji dla argumentów należących do ich dziedzin i interpretować stwierdzenia wykorzystujące notację funkcyjną w odniesieniu do kontekstu. (nasze tłumaczenie)

Students learn to use function notation to evaluate quadratic expressions for specific input numbers. Given a rule such as f(x), they replace the variable with the chosen input, square the value, multiply by any coefficients, and combine the terms to find the final output value.

A frequent stumbling block involves negative inputs and the order of operations. Students often misapply signs when squaring a negative number—writing -3² = -9 instead of (-3)² = 9—or they multiply the input by an outside coefficient before squaring, which leads to an incorrect result.

Practice tasks based on the Value of a quadratic function template typically present an equation such as f(x) = 2x² - 5x + 3 and prompt students to determine outputs such as f(4) or f(-2).
