Curriculum (United Kingdom)

Year 9 Maths

Year 9 maths according to the national curriculum in England: the nth term of a sequence, quadratic graphs, direct and inverse proportion, trigonometry in right-angled triangles, similar triangles and the mean from a grouped frequency table. Every topic comes with ready-made task templates for printable worksheets.

What does a child learn in Year 9 maths?

Year 9 closes key stage 3: a child finds the nth term of a linear sequence, works with geometric sequences and reads linear and quadratic graphs. Proportion moves to equations: y is proportional to x² or inversely proportional to x. The child uses sine, cosine and tangent in right-angled triangles, recognises similar triangles, applies transformations, works with density and limits of accuracy, and estimates the mean from a grouped frequency table.

About the national curriculum: the programmes of study for key stages 3 and 4 are set out for the whole key stage, not year by year. Placing a topic in this year is our decision, based on where it is usually taught; the statutory requirements of the key stage, quoted word for word, are in the section below.
